Real Madrid loses $90M after Pep Guardiola's refusal: failed signing

A last-minute decision alters Real Madrid's plans and keeps a player's future in suspense

This summer's transfer market has left more than one unexpected chapter on Real Madrid's agenda. One of the most talked-about has been the Rodrygo Goes case.

The Brazilian was on the verge of leaving for England, but a decision by Pep Guardiola changed everything. The result: a missed opportunity valued at €90 million.

Rodrygo, from untouchable to transferable

Rodrygo experienced a 24/25 season marked by changes. Xabi Alonso's arrival on the bench brought new ideas, and the Brazilian stopped being a regular starter in the line-up. Vinícius Júnior remains undisputed on the left wing, and Rodrygo has moved into a secondary role, as a top-level substitute or tactical alternative.

This change in status didn't go unnoticed by the player. Aware that his prominence was decreasing, he began to consider a departure. His goal was clear: to keep a starting role, even if it was far from Santiago Bernabéu.

Manchester City's plan

Manchester City was the club that came closest to signing him. Guardiola had him on his list and the plan was set: sell Savinho to Tottenham for about €80 million and make room for Rodrygo.

The deal benefited all parties. Real Madrid would receive up to €90 million. City would add a versatile striker with experience at the top level, and Rodrygo would regain his status as a starter.

For weeks, the deal seemed on track. Even in Chamartín, options were already being analyzed to cover the Brazilian's departure. However, everything depended on a first move: Savinho's exit.

The refusal that changed the market

Hugo Viana, the sporting director managing Savinho, stopped the sale. Guardiola considers the winger a key piece for the 25/26 season and wasn't willing to lose him.
With Savinho at the Etihad, Rodrygo's signing was automatically ruled out.

This decision had a domino effect. Real Madrid lost out on a multi-million sale that would have helped strengthen other areas. Meanwhile, Rodrygo saw the door close on an opportunity that will hardly be repeated under similar conditions.

A future hanging in the air

Rodrygo will remain at Real Madrid, but his situation won't be the same as a year ago. Xabi Alonso will use him as a substitute for Vinícius or as an alternative in specific matches. The player will have to fight for every minute and show that he can regain his untouchable status.

At Manchester City, Guardiola keeps his squad and his trust in Savinho. However, the interest in Rodrygo doesn't disappear completely. If an opportunity opens up next summer, he could try again.

This failed signing makes it clear how unpredictable the market can be. A single move, or the absence of one, can change the fate of footballers and clubs. For Real Madrid, Guardiola's refusal has meant losing €90 million and keeping on the roster a player whose future is more open than ever.
