This fall, millions of families will receive assistance they didn't expect. It's a one-time payment of up to $400 that will be sent automatically, with no paperwork or applications required. Starting in October, this financial relief will arrive by mail to qualifying households.
Although the measure is driven by New York state, the impact will benefit millions of people across the country. We explain everything you need to know.
Why will these checks be delivered?
Inflation continues to hit hard. The cost of living has gone up: food, energy, rent... everything is more expensive. That's why the state government decided to take action.

This check is part of an inflation rebate, approved in the 2026 fiscal year budget. The goal is clear: to return money to low- and middle-income families who've overpaid all year.
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, more than 8.2 million households will receive this assistance. As she said in her official announcement: "This is your money, and we're putting it back in your pockets."
Who will receive the check?
Payments will be based on the 2023 tax return, specifically Form IT-201. If you've already filed your state taxes and meet the income requirements, you don't have to do anything else.
The amounts will be as follows:
- $400 for couples earning up to $150,000 per year
- $300 if they earn between $150,001 and $300,000
- $200 for single people with incomes up to $75,000
- $150 for incomes between $75,001 and $150,000
It's also important that you haven't been claimed as a dependent by someone else on their tax return.
When and how will it be sent?
Mailings will begin in October and continue through November. There won't be a fixed schedule by area, so the check can arrive at any time during that period.

All payments will be sent by physical mail, not by direct deposit. If you meet the requirements, you'll receive it automatically, with no need to submit any additional application.
Authorities have confirmed there won't be online registration or special forms. If you're already in the system and qualify, you're covered.
Assistance that arrives at the right time
With the economy still unstable and many families struggling to make ends meet, this measure offers some relief. Although it doesn't solve every problem, it can help cover essential expenses: food, utilities, or outstanding debts.
In addition, this program is complemented by other measures, such as the increase in the child tax credit and free school meals.
This direct assistance, with no paperwork or delays, makes a difference. Although for now it's limited to New York state, it's a model that could inspire similar actions elsewhere in the country.
Wherever you are, it's worth staying alert. Because when relief arrives without warning, it feels even better.
