Amid the economic challenges many families face in the United States, one state has decided to provide direct financial support to low-income single mothers. This is a pilot project that delivers up to $6,000 in one year, in monthly payments.
A guaranteed income for single mothers
Ohio is the state leading this initiative. The program offers $500 per month for one year to single mothers living in Columbus, the state capital. This assistance is aimed at women whose basic income doesn't exceed 80% of the local average income.
The main goal is to provide them with financial security so they can cover basic needs and improve their children's quality of life. A total of 32 mothers were selected to receive this assistance. Payments began in December 2024 and will continue until December 2025.

Organizations that make the assistance possible
This project isn't just an idea from the state government. Three organizations joined forces to launch this program. RISE Together, Motherful, and UpTogether contributed $211,200.
These organizations have worked for years to defend and promote the well-being of women and children in Ohio. Danielle Sydnor, executive director of RISE Together, states that the program aims to show the positive impact of consistent financial support. This type of assistance can strengthen families' economic and emotional stability.
Ohio State University is studying the impact of the assistance with periodic surveys of the beneficiaries.
Who can access this benefit?
The requirements to receive the payments are clear, though strict due to the limited budget. Only single mothers who:
- Live in Columbus, Ohio.
- Have basic income below 80% of the local average.

This approach directs resources to those who need them most. The goal is to reduce child poverty and support those who struggle every day to move forward.
What does this assistance mean for families?
Child poverty remains a serious problem in many communities in the United States, including Ohio. Recent studies, such as those from Franklin County, show that a small increase in family income can improve children's nutrition. In addition, it also helps strengthen their emotional stability and overall well-being.
This type of program is more than just a simple money transfer. It's real support that can transform lives. In other U.S. cities, similar programs have been successful, while organizations like UpTogether are already replicating the idea in other states such as Michigan.
For now, there's no confirmation that this assistance will be extended. The trend is for guaranteed income and economic support programs to grow, due to inflation and the high cost of living.
