FC Barcelona is experiencing a season start with interesting changes in its defense. After the agonizing victory against Levante (2-3) in the second matchday of LaLiga EA Sports, the blaugrana club is beginning to consider new alternatives for its central defense. One of them is Andreas Christensen, who emerges as a serious competitor for Ronald Araújo.
Christensen takes center stage
The Danish defender made his debut this season against Levante, coming onto the field in the 76th minute, replacing Araújo. Although he played only a few minutes, he performed well: he completed 90% of his passes and won duels on the ground and in the air. In addition, his long pass was accurate, which shows that he can provide ball distribution from the back.
Hansi Flick decided to give him a rest after the match due to mild discomfort. Christensen wasn't present at the recovery session at Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper on Sunday. His physical condition is being carefully monitored, since the September schedule will be very demanding.

Future at Barça
The former Chelsea player's contract ends in a year, but Christensen hasn't shown any intention of leaving. That's why the sporting management is already considering offering him a one-year contract extension. His continuity would be key, especially after Iñigo Martínez's departure to Al-Nassr.
With the veteran gone, Christensen becomes the first option for the bench. This gives him the opportunity to compete directly with Ronald Araújo, who has so far been undisputed in the center of the defense. The competition could force the Uruguayan to keep a higher level, which will benefit the team overall.
A more competitive defense
Having Christensen as a backup not only ensures a quality replacement, but also introduces healthy internal competition. Araújo will have to face the pressure of keeping his starting spot.
Flick can count on a reliable defender who already knows the team's system and brings European experience. This can translate into a more solid Barça defense, especially on double matchdays.
Preparation for a demanding schedule
After the match in Valencia, Flick gave the squad two days off. The idea is not to overload the players before an intense September.
The schedule includes LaLiga and the first stage of the Champions League, whose opponents will be known on August 28. In addition, the international break at the beginning of the following month can create injury risks.
The return to training will be on Wednesday, preparing for the match against Rayo Vallecano as visitors. With the competition in defense increasing, Barça will have more tactical options and physical freshness to face the upcoming challenges.
