José Álvarez confirms Frenkie de Jong's situation: details and conditions of his contract renewal

The journalist from 'El Chiringuito' considers the contract renewal closed and announces all the details of his new contract

Everything has been settled between Frenkie de Jong and FC Barcelona since Hansi Flick arrived on the bench. The Dutchman, who seemed to be out of the project, has become an untouchable member of the starting eleven and now, nobody wants to lose him. The relationship has changed completely, with his contract renewal practically finalized in the last few hours... which was set to expire on June 30, 2026.

Details and conditions

José Álvarez, a journalist from "El Chiringuito" who is very well connected to the sports commission led by Laporta, has spoken. He has said the renewal is practically done, having revealed its details.

José Álvarez began by saying: "Frenkie de Jong has changed agents, it's no longer Ali Dursun. His renewal was pending. Deco met today with his new representative, Sebastien Ledure, and spent an hour and a half this morning to finalize his renewal."

"The foundations were in place, but there was some aspect like the duration: he's expected to renew until 2028, with an optional year until 2029. The salary will stay more or less the same, €9 million net," he stated.

Untouchable for Flick

At 28, Frenkie de Jong is experiencing the best moment of his career since he arrived at Barça. He has always been criticized, especially for the price (€86 million) that was paid for him in 2019. He arrived as the reference in the midfield of the best Ajax in recent times, leading the team in the elimination of Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Beyond his performance, his problem has also been the salary he signed before Bartomeu left. He renewed for the long term, obtaining one of the highest salaries in the squad. Since Laporta arrived, the main goal has been to try to get rid of him, even having a deal closed with Manchester United for almost €80 million.

Despite that, Frenkie de Jong has never wanted to leave. He has endured and the wait has been worth it, because at 28 he will now renew for three more years, with the possibility of extending it to a fourth consecutive season.

At Barça, they are pleased, because this renewal will help lighten the wage bill and fulfill one of Flick's requests. Frenkie de Jong is an undisputed starter for the German and he couldn't leave... much less for free.
