Joan Laporta Touched: Simeone Steals Top Transfer – Sinks Dani Olmo

Joan Laporta didn't expect Simeone's quick move

The transfer market became a year-round battle. In Spain, Atlético de Madrid has been closely competing with Madrid and Barcelona during several transfer windows for some players.

One of the names that has been on the radar of these three giants is Villarreal midfielder Álex Baena. However, it seems that Atlético have taken the lead and intend to close his purchase for the summer of 2025. If confirmed, it would be a hard blow for Barça and Madrid.

Cholo Simeone strikes Laporta first

Baena continues to play at a high level and has become one of the key players for Villarreal under Marcelino. At just 21 years old, he is a regular in the starting eleven and his impact has been key to the Yellows' good start. In addition, his participation in Spain's Olympic gold medal has put him on the radar of several teams beyond the big teams in Spain.

Atlético de Madrid, under Simeone, want to reinforce their midfield with a creative player. Baena fits that profile, and the red-and-white team hasn't hesitated to move quickly to secure his transfer.

Relations with Villarreal are good, as demonstrated by the recent agreement for Sorloth. At the Metropolitano they are confident of reaching an agreement. Baena's contract runs until 2028, but Atlético would be willing to include players to reduce the 60 million he is worth.

Dani Olmo wanted him on his team

On the other hand, FC Barcelona had also shown great interest in Baena. Joan Laporta was clear that, if he managed to resolve the club's financial problems, Baena would be a priority. In fact, it was an express wish of several players, including Dani Olmo, a great admirer of the young midfielder.

However, Barça hasn't been able to compete financially with Atlético in this operation. The financial situation of the club, headed by Deco in the sporting direction, has prevented Barça from matching the rojiblanco offer.

Real Madrid had also been keeping a close eye on Baena, but Atletico have been the quickest to move. If the transfer is finally completed, it would be a coup for both rivals, especially Barça. Baena would've been an important piece for the future of the Catalans, but now it seems that Simeone will be the one to take him to his team.

This move by Atlético de Madrid shows that the club is willing to compete at the highest level with the two giants of Spanish soccer.
