A young and promising addition who, little by little, could start gaining prominence sooner than expected

In Barcelona's plans, Iñigo Martínez was a guaranteed piece for this season. His experience, aerial ability, and capacity to keep calm under pressure made him a very valuable center-back. He arrived last season to strengthen the backline and provide the solidity the team needed.

However, his sudden departure, with no time to react, has broken the defensive scheme Hansi Flick had in mind. The German coach was counting on him to alternate with Araújo, Koundé, and Christensen, rotating according to the schedule and competitions. Now, Barça not only loses a reliable player but also a silent leader in the locker room.

For Flick, this gap can't be filled with just any signing. He needs a center-back who understands positional play, who can adapt quickly and offer guarantees both in the short and long term. That's why the search has accelerated and the board has gotten to work.

The chosen one: Gerónimo Spina

Among the options analyzed, the name that has convinced Deco is Gerónimo Spina. The Argentine center-back, 20 years old, currently plays for Atlético de Madrid's reserve team. Despite his young age, he has already been drafted several times by Simeone for the first team and was even included in the Champions League A list last season.

Spina arrived at Atlético from Estudiantes de La Plata in a move surrounded by controversy. He relied on "parental authority" to sign as a free agent, which caused great anger at the Argentine club. In Madrid, he has shown solidity, personality, and great defensive awareness.

Ongoing negotiations

According to Cazurreando, talks between Barça and Atlético are advanced. Spina has a contract until 2027, so there will be financial compensation and, probably, a percentage on a future sale. Atlético hadn't planned to let him go so soon, but the blaugrana proposal has changed the scenario.

The initial plan would be for the Argentine to join Barça Atlètic. He could adapt to the club's style and, if the schedule demands it, make the jump to the first team.

Deco and the long-term strategy

This move fits the philosophy Deco is implementing: signing young talent before its value skyrockets. The financial situation doesn't allow for major spending, so the club is betting on players who can develop at home and become key pieces or market assets.

Spina represents exactly that. He's not coming to be a starter right away, but as a center-back project who, with time and work, could become a defensive pillar.

For Flick, it's an opportunity to have a new profile with hunger and ambition. For Deco, it's a smart move that secures the future without compromising the present.
