He Speeds Up and Seals the Signing! Goodbye Barça: Simeone Beats Deco to It

Simeone gets ahead and snatches from Barça one of the young full-backs with the most potential on the market

The 2025/26 summer transfer market keeps delivering surprises. When it seemed that Pubill would sign with AC Milan, Atlético surprised everyone and secured the young right-back. Atlético, with Simeone in charge, acted quickly, closed the deal, and left Barça without an option to strengthen the right-back position.

Pubill: rojiblanco for 20 million

The deal was closed for 20 million euros, including variables: 16 million guaranteed and 4 in bonuses. This was confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who always keeps a close eye on the minute-by-minute developments of the market. UD Almería, his original club, also secured a 15% share of a future sale, which shows that they firmly believe in his progression.

This move is part of an ambitious bet by Atlético. They have already surpassed 100 million euros (over $108 million) in signings this summer, with Pubill joining a project that bets on youth with proven quality.

From Milan… to the Metropolitano

Marc Pubill, 22 years old and a native of Terrassa, even underwent an initial medical evaluation with Milan. Everything indicated that his future was in Serie A, but Simeone and Atlético played their cards better. Quick, forceful, and decisive, they convinced him with a competitive project, real playing time, and a clear path for growth.

FC Barcelona, which had been closely following his development, didn't manage to react in time. Deco had him on the agenda, but with Koundé established as a starter, and young players like Héctor Fort and Eric García as alternatives, the blaugrana sporting management decided not to make a strong bid. The result: goodbye to an option for the present… and the future.

A safe bet despite the past

Pubill's signing isn't without risk, but Atlético is clear about it. The player comes from a 2024/25 season without injuries, in which he regained rhythm and consistency. In 2023/24, he suffered a serious knee injury that required a graft, but he is now fully recovered.

He also arrives as an Olympic champion with the Spanish national team in Paris 2024. That achievement strengthens his profile and shows that he can perform at a high level in demanding settings.

Simeone wins the battle

This signing leaves several takeaways. On one hand, Atlético strengthens a key position with a player for the immediate future. On the other, Barça loses an opportunity that was within reach.

Simeone not only adds talent, but also sends a message: Atlético doesn't wait. It acts. While others hesitate, he signs, and in this case, he has beaten Deco.
