Clash of opinions at Real Madrid. The new coach, Xabi Alonso, has made a decision that's likely to generate more than a little tension in the offices at Santiago Bernabéu.
At the crossroads between betting on the Brazilian gem Endrick or trusting the national talent of Gonzalo García, Alonso has chosen the homegrown player. That doesn't fit with the marketing strategy designed by Florentino Pérez.
Endrick, the media signing who has no place
Endrick arrived at Real Madrid as a global phenomenon. Signed at just 16 years old, coming from Palmeiras, his transfer exceeded €60 million (over $65 million) including variables and commissions.
The club presented him as the new jewel of Brazilian soccer, compared to Pelé, Ronaldo Nazário, and Vinícius. Florentino threw himself into his signing.
However, the current reality is quite different. Endrick, who still hasn't made his debut at the Club World Cup, hasn't managed to convince Xabi Alonso. The coach believes he needs playing time, confidence, and time... but away from the media spotlight at Bernabéu.
That's why the decision that's been made has already been communicated to the club: Endrick will go out on loan.
Gonzalo García, the chosen one
Meanwhile, Gonzalo García has been the big positive surprise for Xabi Alonso. The 19-year-old forward, who has already shined with Castilla and has had minutes with the first team, is liked for his adaptability, maturity, and tactical work.
In preseason training, Gonzalo is standing out as one of the best. The coach isn't going to let him go.
Xabi Alonso has already told the sporting management that he's counting on him as the third forward, behind Mbappé and Vinícius. He's even considering giving him a leading role in rotations and Copa matches.
For him, it's a clear message that he trusts the youth academy. If Gonzalo performs, it'll be a direct medal for his personal bet.
Florentino doesn't see it clearly
The problem is that Florentino Pérez doesn't share that vision. The president desired Endrick, beyond his sporting performance, to serve as a global marketing engine, especially in the Latin American market. A loan would be a sign that he's not ready... and that damages the club's official narrative.
For now, the decision is made. Gonzalo stays. Endrick goes out on loan.
Although they'll look for a "controlled" exit to guarantee him playing time, the feeling is that this is a setback for the presidential strategy.
