The Competition Committee to Decide on Vinícius's Punishment: Many Will Not Like It

Real Madrid will appeal regardless of the number of matches imposed on Vinícius

Tomorrow Tuesday, the Competition Committee will meet to decide on the punishment that Vinícius Jr. deserves for the red card he received at Mestalla.

Many won't like the decision of the Competition Committee members. From Barcelona, outrageous demands have been made for Vinícius, citing the two matches Hansi Flick received for protesting. Or the three to Lewandowski for touching his nose.

Some, like Jota Jordi, the Barça fan from Josep Pedrerol'sEl Chiringuito, have tried to pressure the Competition Committee. They've demanded 4 to 12 matches as punishment for Vinícius's action.

The Punishment Vinícius Will Receive

The Brazilian player from Real Madrid merely repsponded to the taunt of the Valencia goalkeeper Dimitrievski, pushing him away. However, enough social pressure has been imposed to judge the incident as if it were an assault.

Vinícius will be punished. Real Madrid will appeal the sanction, whatever it may be, because they believe their player is more a victim than an aggressor in this case.

Vinícius will receive two matches of suspension, which he will serve against Las Palmas and Valladolid in LaLiga. However, he will be able to play in the Spanish Super Cup this week.

In the match report, the referee Soto Grado noted the reason for showing Vinícius the red card. "For deliberately hitting an opponent in the head, with the ball not in play, using non-negligible force."

He then added: "Once expelled, he had to be restrained by club members and taken to the locker rooms while he continued his protests."

From all this, it is inferred that the action can't be considered as assault. That would have meant a minimum of four matches of suspension for Vinícius.

"In-Game Violence" is Not the Same as "Assault"

The Committee will assess the act as in-game violence, which means that, worst-case scenario, he could receive three matches.

However, given the mild consequences the incident had on the physical integrity of the Valencia goalkeeper, it will be two matches.

This is contemplated in section 130: "...acting violently with an opponent during the game or as a consequence of it, provided it does not cause risk or harmful consequences." The prescribed punishment is "from one to three matches."

Vinícius's removal from the field, with the protests included by Soto Grado in the report, could mean another match for Vinícius. However, he would always serve them in LaLiga, never in the Super Cup.

Real Madrid hopes the issue will be solved with two matches.
