Maldini weighs in on Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo: he's very clear about who should leave

Real Madrid faces a crucial dilemma to define the role and future of its young talents in the attack

Real Madrid's 24/25 season has left many doubts and debates. After the Club World Cup, the coaching staff led by Xabi Alonso is analyzing everything that happened.

Although they weren't present at every match, they have reports and experience to thoroughly evaluate the squad. In those evaluations, one name stands out above the rest: Vinícius Júnior.

The decline of Vinícius, an undeniable reality

The Brazilian has experienced a significant drop in his performance this season, and it's no secret to anyone. Even during the training camp in the United States, his level didn't improve. The challenge for Xabi Alonso is enormous: he has to bring back the Vinícius everyone knows.

Vinícius isn't just any player; he's one of the team's best attacking assets. That's why his decline has caused so much debate. Why did he go from being almost unstoppable to performing below the desired level?

Is the Ballon d'Or to blame?

One of the most repeated theories is that losing the 2024 Ballon d'Or affected Vinícius emotionally. Many believe that unexpected defeat marked a turning point in his confidence.

Julio Maldonado, better known as "Maldini," also talks about this. He acknowledges that Vinícius has been below the desired level, but argues that he deserves more opportunities. "How could you not give him more opportunities?" he asks rhetorically.

Maldini backs Vinícius, not Rodrygo

The journalist is clear: "I still believe in Vinícius. More than in Rodrygo." Rodrygo hasn't had an easy season either, with ups and downs and difficult moments. For Maldini, the difference is that Vinícius has shown before that he can shine at a higher level.

He acknowledges that Rodrygo has stability issues, but insists that Xabi Alonso must trust and give minutes to Vinícius.

Xabi Alonso's role: the key to the future

According to Maldini, Xabi Alonso's main task is "to get 100% out of Vinícius, which is a lot." For the veteran analyst, although the season was weak, Vinícius must be a starter next campaign.

"If suddenly it's a disaster, then no, but the opportunity must be there," he says. Patience seems to be the key. In such a short-term soccer world, people quickly forget what Vinícius did not long ago, when he deserved the Ballon d'Or.

Who should leave?

Maldini doesn't hesitate in his answer: the one who should leave is Rodrygo. His situation hasn't improved and, although he has talent, he isn't as convincing as Vinícius.

Vinícius's future at Real Madrid is clear: he will remain a key piece, with the hope of regaining his best form. Xabi Alonso has a lot of work, but also a great asset in his hands.
