Can't Stand Him and Rants Against Him: Florentino Wants to Harm Me

Facing one of the most powerful and influential people in Spain isn't fun

Shocking Statements by Javier Tebas, President of the Professional Football League, to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. He has been outspoken criticizing Florentino Pérez: "He wants to harm me," he claimed.

Tebas has addressed issues of pressing concern in European soccer:

Champions League Revenues

-The New Champions League: "The gap between a few big clubs and the smaller clubs is getting bigger. Just consider that the vast majority of the 36 participants generate much higher revenues with the Champions League than with their national competitions.

Liverpool has so far earned 99 million euros in the Champions League. Young Boys, the last-ranked team in the Champions League, received 29 million euros.

Manchester United, in the Europa League, received 22 million euros. The winner of the Conference League only received eight million.

In other words, the revenues have been concentrated in a single competition. That money will only serve for players who already have five Ferraris to pay for another one".

The Importance of Osasuna in the Champions

-Advice to UEFA: "We need to talk, also with UEFA, about the distribution of the money caused in Europe. My argument is that national leagues are a kind of qualification for the Champions League.

They are the backbone of European soccer. A club like Osasuna has the right to participate in the Champions revenues because it is a necessary part of the pre-qualification for the Champions.

It can't be acceptable that in a league the first team earns five times more money from television revenues than the last team. The internal competitiveness of national leagues is at stake."

Florentino Pérez

-What Does Florentino Pérez Intend with the Super League?

"First and foremost, to surpass Santiago Bernabéu, who was a key creator of the European Cup. It was the precursor competition to the Champions League, in the 1950s. Then he is concerned with controlling the competitions in which he participates.

What certainly doesn't motivate him is the idea of wanting to save soccer. He said it seriously at an Assembly, but only the most fanatical Real Madrid supporters believe that."

-Does He Enjoy Arguing with Florentino?

"No. Facing one of the most powerful and influential people in Spain is not fun. He seeks to harm me and expel me from office."

-What Power Does Florentino Have?

"For example, the governments of 26 EU countries spoke out against the Super League, and the only EU country that withdrew was Spain. Or the fact that a reform of the Sports Law was negotiated with the Government and the opposition. Florentino Pérez discarded it 15 days before the vote in Congress."
