The new driver's license for people over 50: very close to the United States

A significant change that opens the door to a new era in the licensing process for experienced drivers

Are you over 50 years old and would you like to leave behind the process of renewing your driver's license every few years? Veracruz has taken a step that could mark a turning point in Mexico.

Now, people over 50 can access a permanent license, a measure already seen in some states in the U.S. and one that promises convenience and savings.

What is the permanent license and who can get it?

This new driver's license is designed exclusively for people over 50 years old. Unlike the traditional one, it never needs to be renewed again. Once you get it, you can completely forget about returning to the transit office every three or five years.

However, it's important to clarify: you can only access it if you are 50 years old or older. Although anyone over 18 can have a license, this permanent version is an exclusive benefit for those who have already reached that age. It's a kind of reward for your track record as drivers.

How much does it cost and why is it worth it?

At first glance, the price may seem higher than a regular renewal. However, when you do the math, you realize you save much more in the long run.

Here are some examples:

  • Type A (public transportation): $2070 MXN
  • Type B (cargo or private transportation): $1932 MXN
  • Type C (private vehicles): $1656 MXN
  • Type D (motorcycles and ATVs): $1380 MXN

In comparison, renewing your license every three years can cost you between $800 and $1200 MXN each time. That doesn't include the time lost and the paperwork. With the permanent one, you pay only once and that's it.

In addition, if you renewed your license in January or February this year, you can change it to permanent without paying anything extra.

Where and how to complete the process?

The process is simple, you just have to go to any module of the Government of the State of Veracruz. The hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; ideally, you should arrive early to avoid lines.

You will need:

  • Official identification
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of payment
  • Valid license (in case of renewal)

In some cases, they might ask you for a simple medical evaluation. However, most of the time, it's enough to have your paperwork in order.

Why is it compared to the United States?

In several states in the United States, licenses are valid for much longer than in Mexico. Some last up to 12 years, and others, practically for life. With this new measure, Veracruz is keeping up with that more practical and less bureaucratic approach.

Moreover, this could open the door for other Mexican states to adopt something similar. It's a measure that directly benefits thousands of responsible drivers and recognizes their experience and consistency.
