Thousands of families in the United States depend on SNAP benefits each month to feed their households. Now, a new measure brings additional relief. If you already receive SNAP, you could get a second payment without having to complete any paperwork.
What is SNAP and how does it work?
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is a federal financial aid program. It is intended for people with low incomes so they can buy basic food.
The money is deposited each month onto an EBT card. This card works like a debit card and can only be used at certain establishments to buy food.
Millions of people in the United States use this program, especially families with children, older adults, and people with disabilities.

What is the extra aid and who will receive it?
Starting in May 2025, some states are offering additional aid to SNAP. It is a local stimulus check, which can go directly to your EBT card or your bank account.
This extra aid aims to support those who need it most, especially in the face of rising cost of living, inflation, and lack of employment in some areas.
The best part: if you are already a SNAP beneficiary in the participating states, you will receive this aid automatically. You do not need to submit another application.
Which states are already delivering the benefit?
So far, the states that have already activated this new support are:
- California
- Colorado
- Illinois
- New York
- New Mexico
In these places, the amounts vary. For example, New Mexico offers up to $750 per household, while in California the payments are between $300 and $600.
If your state doesn't appear on the list yet, do not worry, this is only the first phase of the program. More states are expected to join in the coming months. You could receive this support in June if your state enters the second round.

What should you do to receive this aid?
In reality, very little. If you are already enrolled in SNAP, the system identifies you automatically. Even so, it is recommended to check your EBT app, your text messages, or your email.
Social services offices could contact you to update information. It is not necessary to go in person unless they ask you to.
They may also send you a letter explaining how and when you will receive the extra money.
Remember that this program aims to support those who are already receiving SNAP. If you are not a beneficiary yet but think you could qualify, consider submitting an application. This could be a good opportunity to stabilize your finances.
