It was the most talked-about moment of the Champions League final. Luis Enrique's clash with Susana Guasch in front of Spanish TV cameras.
Luis Enrique had been holding a grudge against this journalist, who is known for her Espanyol and Madridist background. He already had to deal with her as Barça's coach and hasn't forgotten, even though she thought he had.
"I'm here for Mónica Marchante, not for Susana"
This happened at the end of PSG-Inter (5-0). Movistar interviewed Luis Enrique, the European champion who achieved his second treble against Inter.
"I'm here for Mónica Marchante, you all know it, not much for you, Álvaro. Even less for you, Susana," said Luis Enrique to Movistar Plus's microphones.
Years have passed, but Luis Enrique hasn't forgotten his time at Barça (including the treble), when Susana Guasch worked for Ferreras's TV channel (Atremeedia), always from a Madridist perspective.
That really bothered Luis Enrique, and he has chosen to make it public now. After many years of taking hits from the same people during his time as Spain's coach, he now feels it's time to respond.
"Hey, time flies. How long has it been?" was all the journalist could say, recalling an incident she had with Luis Enrique in 2016.
"You talk about whatever you want and I'll answer whatever I feel like"
Barça were eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals by Atlético. The criticism was harsh, and Luis Enrique defended himself:
"Your analysis is quite superficial and gratuitous. It has nothing to do with that of a professional..."
The accusation was aimed directly at Susana Guasch. She followed up, and Luis Enrique closed the subject: "I'll say it again, you talk about whatever you want and I'll answer whatever I feel like."
Susana Guasch has now tried to limit the animosity Luis Enrique has for her to a single incident. That's not the case. Luis Enrique can't stand her because of her professional approach over many years, not because of an isolated event.
The Asturian coach had to deal with Guasch and her pro-Madrid narrative while pretending to be neutral, which she wasn't. A culer like him can't forgive that.
She wanted to limit it to an isolated clash: "I hadn't seen him in nine years. I see that he hasn't forgotten my work and that he didn't like it. Well, to each their own... but that's it, nothing else happened, just that."
Susana Guasch's scarf journalism, with likes and dislikes
The best part is that he, almost a decade later, is still doing his thing and so am I. He'll keep thinking that journalists don't have a damn clue —the title, by the way, of a wonderful documentary about him," the Movistar journalist points out."
Susana Guasch has expressed annoyance with "a certain newspaper, which lives off clickbaits. Unfortunately, it reminded me that I worked at La Sexta. I covered all the matches as a sideline reporter for the Champions League on Antena 3.
It was 2016, Luis Enrique was coaching Barça, and I did all the interviews with him before and after the matches. As always: journalism, asking everyone, the winner and the loser".
Scarf journalism, that's what Susana Guasch failed to say. Luis Enrique hasn't forgotten. Maybe he was disappointed that in Munich Susana Guasch didn't pull out her Real Madrid scarf.
