The relationship between Marc-André ter Stegen and FC Barcelona is going through its worst moment since the goalkeeper arrived at the club in 2014. What once seemed like a strong and lasting union is now a series of tensions that have set off alarms at Camp Nou.
From undisputed starter to supporting actor
The first trigger came with Hansi Flick's decision. The coach announced that the goal this season would go to Joan García, recently signed from RCD Espanyol. It was a bet on the future that relegated the German to a role he wasn't willing to accept... or so the board thought.
Joan Laporta and Deco trusted Ter Stegen would look for a new destination to keep being a starter, especially with the 2026 World Cup in mind. Without competition from Manuel Neuer, he had everything to be Germany's number one. However, he surprised everyone by announcing he wouldn't leave.

The contract as a shield
The goalkeeper has clung to his contract, valid until 2027. He claims he hasn't received offers that are attractive to him either in sporting or financial terms. At Barça, they interpret this as a block to the squad restructuring plans.
The tension grew when he decided to undergo back surgery. The procedure will keep him out for at least four months (4 meses), practically half the season. This halted any possibility of an immediate transfer.
The most controversial aspect was his refusal to sign the medical report, preventing the club from freeing up part of his salary. This forced them to take unexpected measures, such as selling Íñigo Martínez to Al-Nassr to reduce the wage bill.
Punishment and loss of leadership
The board reacted harshly. Disciplinary proceedings and removal of the captain's armband. It was a forceful gesture that marked a turning point in the relationship.
Inside the locker room, many teammates wanted to keep him as a leader. However, the decision had already been made. Ter Stegen's influence in the group has diminished and he no longer conveys the same authority as before.
The incident at home and an uncertain future
When it seemed the situation couldn't get any worse, a new clash occurred. According to El Nacional, Ter Stegen didn't allow Barça's medical staff into his home to supervise his recovery. The club interpreted this as a direct challenge.
The board believes there's no room for reconciliation. They see his departure as inevitable, even though there aren't any strong offers today. The problem is that his high salary and long contract make any operation difficult.
Thus, what was once a relationship of trust and success now seems destined to end in a painful divorce. Ter Stegen goes from being a Barça symbol to becoming an uncomfortable case to solve. Meanwhile, the team continues on its path not knowing if it will see him between the posts again.
