Atlético de Madrid started the 2025/26 LaLiga season unexpectedly, and the defeat against Espanyol (2-1) made it clear that there are still gaps to fill. However, not all the news was bad. Julián Álvarez excelled in Cornellà and became the positive note of the match.
The Argentine forward opened the scoring with a spectacular free kick, sending the ball over the wall and into the top corner. Marko Dmitrovic, who hadn't conceded a direct free kick goal in five years, couldn't stop it. Álvarez has already scored 18 goals in 38 LaLiga matches with Atlético.
Outstanding individual performance
Although the team lost, Julián was unstoppable. In 82 minutes, he was the player with the most shots on target, five in total, including one that hit the post.

He completed 36 out of 42 passes, succeeded in two dribbles, won two duels, and recovered three balls. Despite his great performance, Atlético couldn't keep the lead.
After the match, the forward's frustration was evident. His gesture as he left the field reflected his disappointment with the defeat. On his social media, he dedicated his goal to his pregnant wife, also noting that Argentina was celebrating Children's Day.
Barça target Julián Álvarez
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona are closely monitoring the forward as a possible replacement for Robert Lewandowski in 2026, but the operation won't be easy. The Argentine's release clause is set at €500 million, although his departure could cost around €100 million. It's a high figure, but manageable if Atlético continue to fall short in title races.
Due to financial fair play restrictions and Lewandowski's current contract, the Culers ruled out strengthening the attack this year. However, signing a "9" will be a priority when the Polish striker leaves the club.
Options on the table
Joan Laporta has always had big names in mind. Erling Haaland was a dream, but his contract renewal with Manchester City until 2034 and his salary make it almost impossible. That's why Julián Álvarez appears as the most realistic option.
Other names are also being mentioned, such as Harry Kane, who could leave Bayern Munich at 33 for a fee close to €50-60 million. It would be an interesting signing, similar to the strategy used with Lewandowski in 2022.
