A smiling player in a blue and white striped jersey touches his chest as money graphics appear around him.

Laporta KO. The numbers don't add up for him with Nico: 'It won't be 20 million...'

Nico's deal gives Barça 11+13 million while Porto takes 36 million net

"Barça will make a fortune from the sale of Nico González to Manchester City". That was the headline yesterday. Today we know that the fortune will be much less than expected.

Barça's urgencies, hit in its financial flotation line, lead to wrong decisions that cause the club to lose money.

Barça sold half of the 40% of its capital gain

It happened with Nico González. Barça sold him to Porto for 8 million, reserving 40% of the capital gain caused in a future and hypothetical transfer.

City has bought Nico from Porto for 60 million. The 40% of the capital gain is 20.64 million, but that won't be the amount Barcelona will receive.

In the end, only 13 million will reach the coffers of the blaugrana club. Porto has reported that it bought half of the percentage of that capital gain for 3 million euros. Barça didn't communicate that detail to its members.

Barça will earn less than expected

That means that for 3 million euros needed to cover holes months ago, Barça loses 7 million in the operation that has taken Nico González to Manchester City.

Porto has detailed the particulars of the transfer, with transparency, distancing itself from the confidentiality clauses that characterize Laporta's Barça:

"FC Porto informs that it has exercised in advance the purchase option from Futbol Club Barcelona ("FC Barcelona") of 20% of the capital gains in the player's transfer. And the value is 3M€ (three million euros).

FC Barcelona is entitled to only 20% of the capital gain from the transfer. Also canceling the buyback option it had for 30M€ (thirty million euros), exercisable until June 30, 2025".

The business with Nico was done by Porto

Barça sold Nico to Porto, reserving 40% of the capital gain in a future transfer. In the end, it only had 20%.

The blaugrana club will close the operation with a total income of 24 million euros. Here the business was done by Porto, which paid 11 million for Nico and will receive 47 million from City.

Net, they will have 36 million, a clear example of skill in office negotiations.

Another matter that Joan Laporta will have to explain after the winter market closed its doors without news. Barça tried to sign Rashford, but the player got tired of waiting and opted for the security offered by Aston Villa.
