Jules Koundé isn't an undisputed starter at Barça and Hansi Flick makes it clear to him.

Intense internal competition marks every starting eleven decision at Barça at the start of the season

Hansi Flick's second season in charge of FC Barcelona began with good news in terms of results: two consecutive victories in LaLiga EA Sports 2025/26. But beyond the wins, the message to the squad has been clear: there are no untouchable players.

This philosophy is especially evident in the situation of Jules Koundé and Dani Olmo. Both, considered important pieces last season, have started from the bench in the first two matchdays. The French right-back has seen Eric García keep the starting spot, while Olmo is competing with Fermín López and Raphinha for a place in the attacking midfield.

Adaptation minutes

Although neither started as a starter, both have had playing time. Dani Olmo has played 90 minutes, split evenly between the matches against Mallorca and Levante. Jules Koundé, on the other hand, has only enjoyed 18 minutes in total: 13 against Mallorca and 5 against Levante.

The current situation is a clear reminder that internal competition at Barça is fierce. Not even players who showed great performances last season have a guaranteed starting spot.

The fight to return to the XI

Koundé and Olmo are aware that they must raise their level to earn a place in the starting eleven. Jules, almost a regular starter last year, contributed 4 goals, 8 assists, and good connection with Yamal. Olmo, with an inconsistent season due to injuries that made him miss about 20 matches, added 12 goals and 7 assists.

Both trust that, with hard work and consistency, they will be able to regain their starting spots. Flick values performance over personal history, so daily effort and effectiveness on the field are the currency to return to the starting eleven.

Barça without "untouchables"

At the start of this season, Pedri and Lamine Yamal seem undisputed. However, Hansi Flick has made it clear that even they aren't exempt from being left out of the team if their performance drops. The German coach always seeks the best version of Barça in every match, prioritizing efficiency and collective dynamics over individual names.

The example is clear: Pedri remains the engine of the team and has already scored a stunning goal against Levante. Yamal, meanwhile, has shown his quality with one goal and two assists in the first two matches, showing why he's considered one of the best in the world.
