Joan Laporta stops his departure, decision made at Barça: 'You're not leaving'

The president of FC Barcelona is certain that he must keep wearing the blaugrana jersey

The situation of Frenkie de Jong has become one of the main topics at FC Barcelona at the start of this season. The Dutchman’s contract ends on June 30, 2026 (June 30, 2026), which is just a year away, and as of today there's no contract renewal agreement. According to "El Nacional", Joan Laporta is very clear about his position: he won't allow him to leave for free under any circumstances.

Laporta doesn't want to repeat mistakes

The culer president has been firm on this matter.  Frenkie de Jong arrived at the time after an investment of more than €80 million, and it would be unaffordable for the club’s finances if he left Spotify Camp Nou without leaving a single euro in the coffers.  Laporta believes it would be a historic mistake, which is why all options are being considered to keep him or, in the worst-case scenario, secure a good transfer fee.

Offers from Saudi Arabia

Meanwhile, Barça are trying to clarify the situation, and clubs from Saudi Arabia are keeping a close eye on the Dutch footballer. De Jong is handling multi-million euro offers to make the move to the Saudi Pro League, where he'd be guaranteed a salary that Barcelona can't match. However, the player himself has made it clear to those around him that his priority is still Barça. Frenkie wants to succeed at Spotify Camp Nou and still isn't considering taking a step back in sporting terms, even though the financial offer from Saudi Arabia is tempting.

The main problem is the timeline.  With De Jong’s contract expiring in 2026 (2026), the club is facing a countdown that has already begun. "El Nacional" insists that if a renewal doesn't happen soon, the culer entity could be forced to listen to transfer offers to avoid losing him completely for free. This is a scenario that neither Laporta nor the sporting management want, but it could become a necessity if there’s no progress in the coming months.

Frenkie de Jong, key piece in the system

The final decision isn't easy, because De Jong remains a crucial player for the team. His ability to break lines with his runs, provide clean ball progression, and adapt to different roles in midfield makes him an irreplaceable footballer. Hansi Flick counts on him as an undisputed starter, and his departure would force Barça to go to the market with a major investment.
