Gerard Romero's Imminent Surprise to Sign with Barça Soon: 'He's At...'

Jijantes sets a date for the renewal of a key player for Hansi Flick

Barça has been working for several weeks to assemble the team for next season and not get caught off guard. In this planning, there is a player whose contract is ending but no one doubts he is going to stay: Íñigo Martínez. In the latest episode of Jijantes, journalist Carlos Monfort was adamant about his continuity and even set a date.

Íñigo Martínez's continuity at Barça for next season is virtually confirmed. In his current contract, which expires on June 30, there's an automatic renewal clause that's about to be executed. It's just a few days away from happening, as it will activate once he meets the minimum number of matches he must play to continue.

So far, the Basque center-back has played a total of 26 matches this season, being key in Hansi Flick's starting eleven. This automatic renewal will activate once he reaches 60% of matches playing a minimum of 45 minutes. He's done so in almost all, missing only the match against Osasuna (a 2-4 defeat) due to a technical decision.

The information from Jijantes, a media outlet directed by Gerard Romero, is clear: Íñigo Martínez is just six games away from automatically renewing with Barça. The center-back is an undisputed starter for Hansi Flick. He's earned the affection of all the culers due to the excellent partnership he forms with Cubarsí. He'll soon reach the minimum for his renewal and Laporta couldn't be happier, certifying the continuity of a key piece of the project.

Íñigo Martínez Could Have Left Barça in 2024: the Key Clause

Íñigo Martínez could have unilaterally become a free agent last summer. All due to a clause stipulated in his contract, which offered this possibility if he wasn't registered in LaLiga before July 15. The Basque center-back also had the right to request his full salary for the entire season, something he ultimately declined.

Hansi Flick conveyed calmness and kept his word. Now, months later, Íñigo Martínez couldn't be happier with his decision to continue at FC Barcelona. He's an undisputed starter, forms a top-level duo with Cubarsí and, in the coming weeks, his renewal until 2026 will be certified.

There are plans to make significant changes in Barça's defense for the next season, but Íñigo Martínez won't leave in any way. His continuity for the 2025/26 season is confirmed.
