Deco says no to Marcus Rashford to sign a better winger for €85M

Deco agrees with Hansi Flick to secure the signing of a winger who could be key for next season

Barcelona is clear that they need to strengthen the squad, and Hansi Flick's priority is a winger who brings versatility and quality. Marcus Rashford appeared on the list of candidates, but things have changed. Deco, the sporting director, prefers to go for another player whom they consider more complete.

Hansi Flick wants versatile players

The German coach has made it clear that he is looking for footballers who can adapt to different positions. It is no coincidence that Eric Garcia went from center-back to right-back after Koundé's injury, showing the importance of flexibility.

This ability to fill different roles on the field gives the team greater tactical flexibility and makes rotations easier, something Flick values highly to face a long and demanding season. That's why Barça is going for players who can contribute in several areas and provide solutions depending on the needs of the match.

Luis Díaz, Deco and Flick's choice

Luis Díaz, the Colombian winger from Liverpool, is the perfect example of that versatility. He can play on the left wing and, if necessary, as a center forward. Flick sees him as a very valuable footballer for his system. Not only because of his talent, but also because of his ability to switch roles without losing effectiveness.

Deco is also convinced that Luis Díaz is the ideal signing. He arrives after a spectacular season in the Premier League. He scored 17 goals, his best tally so far, and was key in Liverpool's title.

This performance has put him at the peak of his career. The player went from being worth €7 million in Portugal to a current value of €85 million ($7 million) (85 million euros), according to Transfermarkt. Liverpool paid €45 million ($45 million) to Porto in 2022, and now they expect to recover much more.

The main obstacle: the price

The main problem for Barça is financial. Liverpool is asking between €70 million ($70 million) and €80 million ($80 million) for Luis Díaz, a very high figure for the coffers of the Catalan club.

In addition, Liverpool is active in the market and has just signed Florian Wirtz for about €100 million ($100 million). This makes any possible negotiation even more difficult.

Marcus Rashford?

Although Marcus Rashford was on the initial list, Deco has rejected this option. He believes that Luis Díaz brings more to the team, both in quality and tactical adaptation. In addition, Rashford doesn't offer the same versatility as the Colombian.

This decision shows that Barça is looking for more than just a simple winger. They want a player who fits with the philosophy of the new project and can provide solutions in several positions.
