Aitana Bonmatí’s Latest Update Changes Everything in Spain: ‘She Could Miss the…’

The two-time Ballon d'Or winner watched Spain's last friendly from the hospital just a few days before the start of the Euro Cup

Just a few days before the start of the Euro Cup, Aitana Bonmatí has given everyone a scare and might end up missing it. The concern is at its highest in Spain with less than a week to go before the competition begins. Between July 2 and 27, it will take place in Switzerland, and Montse Tomé delivered the news just minutes before the end of the friendly against Japan (3 to 1).

"This morning they took her for tests. In the last test, she has viral meningitis. The word is frightening, but, in principle, it's under control. We don't know the timeline," said Spain's coach.

For the past few days, Aitana Bonmatí had been experiencing a fever, but she hadn't been ruled out for the last friendly before the Euro Cup. However, all the concern broke out when it became known that she wasn't included in the squad against the Japanese. Afterwards, the footballer herself posted a photo on her personal Instagram account from her hospital bed while following the match.

In this regard, Tomé explained that they will welcome the Catalan with open arms whenever she's available, no matter when. "Aitana is a hugely important player and we're going to wait for her until the end. The only information I have is that we don't know the timeline. If I say anything, I'd be mistaken because I'm not a doctor. She's a hugely important player," she concluded.

Aitana Bonmatí: The pillar of Spain

Aitana Bonmatí, at just 27 years old, is already a legend in women's soccer. An absolute reference both at FC Barcelona and with Spain's national team, the Catalan midfielder is going through a delicate moment after it was confirmed that she's suffering from viral meningitis, which could leave her out of the Euro Cup. A possible absence that worries both the blaugrana environment and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

With two Ballon d'Or awards in her trophy case, Bonmatí has been a key piece in Women's Barça's golden era, leading a midfield that has dominated Europe with authority. Her vision of the game, passing accuracy, and leadership on the field make her an irreplaceable profile. Aitana stands out not only for her technical talent but also for her tactical intelligence and competitive commitment.

The uncertainty about her presence in the Euro Cup represents a hard blow for Spain, which considers her its driving force. Without Aitana, the team would lose creativity, control, and personality. Both the club and the national team hope for a positive recovery, but time is running out.
