Laporta hasn't lost track of him. His contract ends on June 30, 2025 and he could arrive on a completely free transfer. We are talking about Alphonso Davies, a Canadian full-back who's decided to leave Bayern when his contract expires.
Sport has revealed that Laporta is trying to make a move on Alphonso Davies. Real Madrid has had him under control for some time, but now it can't promise anything. There has been an approach from Barça and the Canadian hasn't closed any doors, in fact, he has opened them widely.
Two months before Alphonso Davies can sign for the club he wants, Laporta has sent the sporting director to find out about the financial situation. He's asked for a high salary, but it would fall within the Barça's demands.
In this sense, the Canadian wants a transfer bonus of more than 10 million euros. This could be spread over the years of the contract he signed, so there wouldn't be much trouble. It is a high-caliber operation, but Laporta is willing to dig deep into his pocket to take it away from Real Madrid.
Alphonso Davies could've been a Barça player in 2019
While Laporta now wants him for free... the truth is that Barça had the opportunity to take Davies very, very cheaply in 2019.
While Bartomeu was in charge, the name of Alphonso Davies was on his desk. He was still playing in Vancouver and was a real bargain at less than three million euros.
The problem is that Laporta's predecessor in office rejected this offer. He would've started at Barça B, but Bartomeu considered that he didn't have the level needed simply because he was born in Canada.
So, five years later, Laporta corrected Bartomeu's historic mistake. The possibility of Alphonso Davies is real, but Barça has a lot of work ahead of them; it won't be easy.
Real Madrid, among others, has been working on this possibility for a long time, while Barça has just asked. However, Alphonso Davies's reply has given rise to the possibility of taking this possible operation at zero cost into account, and a lot of work will have to be done now.
